In 2010 I had the pleasure of collaborating with Susan Wald on a production of Sophocles’ ELEKTRA, staged by my independent theatre company Fraught Outfit. Susan was present throughout the entire rehearsal process, observing and responding through her drawings.

She became a kind of visual dramaturge, documenting the inner workings and sensory experience of the process. Throughout the season, her drawings were displayed in the foyer. For an audience, they revealed a personal and abstracted layer of our production. Susan became involved with this project as there were strong thematic connections between her work and ours.

I am also very interested in the interdisciplinary relationship between visual art and theatre, and the creative potential this space holds. Susan became a valued member of the company, whose perspective and presence were welcomed by the cast and creative team. I, along with my collaborators, were often awestruck and moved by Susan’s work. We felt that it captured something unnameable in what we were trying to achieve.
